"A New Way To Bleed" (alternate legal title: New Way to Bleed[1]) is a bonus track on the deluxe edition of Evanescence's self-titled third studio album. It's one of the three songs on the album that feature harp.

The song was included on the compilation album Lost Whispers in 2016, as part of the The Ultimate Collection box set.

Meaning[]

Amy said in a Rockline Radio interview on October 17, 2011:

That was a song that Terry and I worked on together about a year ago. I think that song is the closest to sort of our moment from The Open Door. It's hard to explain exactly without pissing people off. I was sort of singing about the label not getting what we were doing, to be honest. "Is this the end of everything or just a new way to bleed?" Yes, it's a new way to bleed.[2]

The song may be connected to the fact that the band's label scrapped the original version of the third album,[3] thus forcing them to rewrite it, i.e. "a new way to bleed", meaning to sacrifice their artistry to meet the label's demands.

Lyrics[]

Serve your twisted enemy
So you might earn forgiveness
You know your whole world is waiting
So why can’t you speak?

I feel it coming over me
I'm still a slave to these dreams
Is this the end of everything
Or just a new way to bleed?

So go and tell all your friends that I'm a failure underneath
If it makes you feel like a bigger man
But it's my, my heart, my life that you're calling a lie
I've played this game before
And I can't take anymore

I feel it coming over me
I'm still a slave to these dreams
Is this the end of everything
Or just a new way to bleed?

By drifting far beyond the edge...

Freedom, freedom
Can't you feel the ground caving in?
Freedom
Give us a reason to believe again

I feel it coming over me
I'm still a slave to these dreams
Is this the end of everything
Or just a new way to bleed?

Trivia[]

  • This song was first heard in May 2011 when Terry Balsamo tweeted a studio clip of Amy recording vocals for the song's bridge. It's noted the use of the piano instead of the harp.
  • A remix by Photek was featured on the Avengers Assemble soundtrack album, but the song didn't play in the film.
  • Fans have noticed that the song's intro bears a similarity to a demo track called "Army" by A Perfect Circle. Listen here.

  3. As revealed by Amy in 2015: "That album was the first time I watched something I was working on totally blow up in my face. The suits had a change of heart during a frustrating recording process and I was told that none of the songs I'd been pouring my heart into for a year, in any form, were good enough -- time to start over. I was devastated. I was furious. I was determined to take control of the situation and use it to push myself forward. It ended up making me angry enough to write Evanescence's heaviest album -- which I love- -- and we did end up using three songs from the original project"
