Erase This is the sixth song on the third self-titled studio album, Evanescence. Its original title was "Vanilla."
Background and development[]
Working titles for the song were "Vanilla" and "Sharkfin Backpack".[1] On April 12, 2011, Amy uploaded a video on TwitVid titled "Will Shreds" in which Will plays the last drum part of "Erase This".[2]
Amy said this was one of the last songs to be finished on the album, because she was still writing the lyrics throughout the recording process.[1]
In a live Q&A, Amy stated that she started writing this song with Terry around June 2010. She further said that they couldn't come up with a chorus for a song, and Nick Raskulinecz had the idea to combine the verse and chorus from two separate songs together, making "Erase This".[3][4]
During its conception, the song had three different demos with as many titles. It was initially written by Amy and Terry in June 2010, but they couldn't finish it. In September 2010, the band was brought in to work on it, but it was only finished during pre-production in early 2011.[5]
Lyrics[]
It’s too late to change your mind I can’t wash these sins away Is it so hard for you? I’m not gonna let this day go by Not enough to say goodbye Is it so hard for you? The water’s rising around us Is it so hard for you? |

So we took like the awesome verse of one and the awesome chorus of another and smash them together. I actually think that part of us really cool about the song for me is the feeling of the shift between the verse and the chorus because they didn’t originally belong together."
