"Exodus" is the fourth song on Evanescence EP from the POV of a young runaway. Amy commented on the song on EvThreads:[1]
It's just hard because you're your own worst critic and I hear myself say "my black backpack stuffed with broken dreams" and want to shoot myself. I seriously can't listen to the verses to that song without squinting. But I don't deny that there was a magic in those early songs. Each one was so exciting to us, we were just learning that we had the ability to make our favorite music.
Live Performance[]
“Exodus” was played live at Vino's Bar in 1999 with Ben Moody on electric guitar and Stephanie Pierce on backing vocals. The live version closes with the lyrics that would later be heard in the song ”Missing”: “Can you stop the fire? Can you stand to fight her? You can’t stop the fire, you won’t say the words”, revealing that this song eventually evolved into “Missing”— likewise told from the POV of a young runaway.

My black backpack's stuffed with broken dreams Here in the shadows, I'm safe, I'm free Two months pass by and it's getting cold Here in the shadows, I'm safe, I'm free Show me the shadow where true meaning lies |
