"Exodus" is the fourth song on Evanescence EP. It also appeared on the Demo album.
Background
Interestingly, when Evanescence performed it live on May 7th, 1999 it featured lyrics from "Missing" at the end, although the song had not yet been written, and the song features a guitar in the beginning.
Amy commented on the song on EvThreads:[1]
It's just hard because you're your own worst critic and I hear myself say "my black backpack stuffed with broken dreams" and want to shoot myself. I seriously can't listen to the verses to that song without squinting. But I don't deny that there was a magic in those early songs. Each one was so exciting to us, we were just learning that we had the ability to make our favorite music.
Performances
The song was played live at Vino's Bar in 1999 with an extended intro.
Lyrics
EP version
My black backpack's stuffed with broken dreams Here in the shadows, I'm safe, I'm free Two months pass by and it's getting cold Here in the shadows, I'm safe, I'm free Show me the shadow where true meaning lies |
Live Version
My black backpack's stuffed with broken dreams Here in the shadows, I'm safe, I'm free Two months pass by and it's getting cold Here in the shadows, I'm safe, I'm free Show me the shadow where true meaning lies Can you stop the fire? Can you stand to fight her? |
