"Like You" is the eighth track on Evanescence's second studio album, The Open Door.

Background[]

"Like You" was written in memory of Amy Lee's deceased sister, as was "Hello" on Fallen. Lee stated: "I can't help but be affected by that, and if it's my place to express myself and all the things that have been most deep and the most painful and have just touched me, I feel like it does honor her."

From a Metal Edge interview in November 2006:[1]

"It is about something that's hard to even talk about but feels good to write about. It’s about my sister who passed away when I was a little girl. I was six years old and she was three. It's affected my life and definitely affected my music writing, and it's made me who I am. It's one of those things that happens early enough in life that it forms you. I think in a lot of ways I made it a thing that I can use in a positive way in my life. I've learned from it and grown up, and I've always felt older. Twenty-four sounds young to me, it's weird.

She told Iceberg Radio in 2006:

"I wrote this song for my sister that passed away when I was very young. I write music for her just ocasionally because I think it's hard to get something to live up to her worth, you know? But it definitely has affected me and caused a lot of music writing. And I think it would always good to have at least one song on the record be for her, and on the last record it was 'Hello', so this is sort of the 'Hello' for the new record."[2]

A piece of the song was used as a intro for "Lithium" during the Evanescence tour in 2012.[3]

Lyrics[]

Stay low, soft, dark, and dreamless
Far beneath my nightmares and loneliness
I hate me for breathing without you
I don't want to feel anymore for you

Grieving for you
I'm not grieving for you
Nothing real love can't undo
And though I may have lost my way
All paths lead straight to you

I long to be like you
Lie cold in the ground like you

Halo, blinding wall between us
Melt away and leave us alone again
Humming, haunted somewhere out there
I believe our love can see us through in death

I long to be like you
Lie cold in the ground like you
There's room inside for two
And I'm not grieving for you
I'm coming for you

You're not alone
No matter what they told you
You're not alone
I'll be right beside you forevermore

I long to be like you, sis
Lie cold in the ground like you did
There's room inside for two
And I'm not grieving for you

And as we lay in silent bliss
I know you remember me

I long to be like you, sis
Lie cold in the ground like you did
There's room inside for two
And I'm not grieving for you

And as we lay in silent bliss
I know you remember me

I long to be like you
Lie cold in the ground like you
There's room inside for two and I'm not grieving for you
I'm coming for you
