"Taking Over Me" is the eighth track on Evanescence's first studio album, Fallen.
Background[]
This song was originally recorded in the 2001-2002 demo sessions before being chosen to be recorded for Fallen. Amy Lee explained the song:
Taking Over Me is about obsession. Like you're obsessed with someone who you believe is the one for you. I don't know. It's about obsession.
In a Kerrang! cover story concerning the 20th anniversary of Fallen, Amy revealed that the song was secretly written about her then-acquaintance and future husband, Josh Hartzler:[1]
“As with Bring Me To Life, I was writing that one about [Amy’s future husband] Josh kinda too, secretly. A lot of my lyrics have double meanings. There is the main meaning and then there’s the secret, sub-meaning for me. The main meaning was storytelling from the eyes of the stalker – with the line, ‘You don’t remember me, but I remember you.’ It was sort of the prequel to Snow White Queen [from 2006’s The Open Door]. But the underneath meaning was that I was having all these feelings for this guy that I couldn’t tell him about. Why tell one story when you can two? I do that so often!”
A demo, dated November 15, 2001, was officially released on a cassette tape with unreleased demos as part of Fallen 20th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition Box Set in March 2024.
